Starting a Home Based Business
How to get started
One of the easiest ways to save money when you’re starting up a business is to build it out of your home. You save time and money on trying to select and establish a location, and all of your facility overhead is already figured into your home budget. Even better, you don’t have to commute!
Your First Steps
Here’s what you need to do to get started on your home business:
- Choose your business. Pick something that suits your interests and abilities. Make sure it’s something that you can afford to get into, and something that’s sustainable.
- Plan for the future. Even the smallest business needs a business plan. You need to establish goals, develop a process, create a timeline and design a budget.
- Find some cash. Figure out how you’re going to support your business. Whether that means applying for a small business loan, dipping into savings or retaining a part time job outside the home, you need to spend money to make money!
- Get started. Set up an office or workspace in your home that’s designed just for work. Find a quiet area where you can concentrate, with enough space for you to complete the type of work you’re going to do. Stock it full of all the office supplies you’ll need (think computer, printer, work desk, as well as pens, pencils and a stapler) so that you’re not running out for supplies when you’re trying to get things done.
- Market yourself. The key to business success is visibility. Invest some time and money into a marketing solution that will work for you. You might hit the Internet, pass out flyers or even advertise in your community groups. Budget your advertising carefully, though - you don’t want to be spending more than you’re making.
- Stay organized. While start-up tends to be the most difficult part for most home business owners, you have to remember to concentrate on the long haul. Stay organized and always have a plan! You shouldn’t be leaving anything up to chance. If necessary, enlist outside help in the form of a consultant or a mentor to help you keep your operation running smoothly.
