Franchises
Choosing the right option for your small business
If you want to get into business for yourself but are unsure which venture is best for you, franchises offer a ton of options.
The great thing about franchising is that while you’re operating your own business, you’re not on your own. Franchises offer support for all types of different operating concerns, including choosing a location, decorating a location, establishing best processes and maintaining a quality business. While some small business owners might find the franchising process a bit stifling (because there are some areas where control is limited), for many a franchise can turn into an easy success.
Types of Franchises
There are many different industries that offer franchise opportunities. The most popular include:
- Restaurants. From fast food chains to top notch eateries, successful restaurants frequently turn into chains that offer franchising opportunities to the right investor. You don’t even have to be a chef to cash in on the deal!
- Fitness chains. The health industry has recently exploded, and fitness centers have easily become a popular franchise option. Choose between women-only gyms, ultra athletic clubs or small family fitness centers.
- Beauty franchises. From hair salons to complete day spas, the beauty industry is recognizing the value of an established name, and so is venturing into the franchise process.
- Clothing stores. A known brand name is typically an easy sale, so many small business owners are foregoing the establishment of a small clothing store in favor of joining a chain.
- Hotels and accommodations. For those thinking a little bigger, the travel industry lives off of the franchise - reputation is everything!
How to Choose the Right Franchise
So, you’ve decided that franchising is right for you - but how do you know which industry to get into, when there’s so much choice? Here are some questions to ask yourself:
- What are you interested in? The point of self employment is to avoid a job you don’t like! Make sure you choose something you want to do when you’re looking at a franchise. Remember, this could potentially be something you’re doing 30 years from now, so be honest with yourself.
- What’s your budget? Some franchises have larger start-up costs than others. You need to know how much it costs to invest in your interests - it doesn’t matter how much you like it if you can’t afford it! There's a good chance that you will have to apply for a loan in order to get started.
- How successful is the franchise? The point of investing in a franchise is easing some of the risk involved in opening your own business. There’s no benefit in investing in a business that’s not established and ready to support you. That means you need to check how long it’s been around, how many locations there are, and how successful other franchises have been.
- What will they offer you? Franchises are supposed to be supported by their parent company. Find out if they offer start-up assistance, training, supplies and continued support.
