Bar Codes

Tracking your inventory with ease

Tracking inventory using bar code labels is a hyper-efficient way of keeping a business organized. It can reduce the time it takes to do inventory, and it is a great way for small businesses to interface with larger retailers. Bar coding has become an almost universally recognized system for doing inventory, and the equipment required to implement a bar coding system is both affordable and easy to use.

How to Get a Bar Code Label

To use a bar coding system at your business, you will need to purchase a UPC bar code that is specific to your product (this can be done online). This will provide you with a bar code label that is completely unique. Once you have purchased this, the company you purchase your bar coding from should send you a high quality digital image of your product’s bar code, which you then use to create a bar code label that is physically attached to your product.

Additional Bar Coding Supplies

In addition to your bar code labels, you will need a bar code scanner to read information off your bar code labels (as well as some bar code software to accompany it). A bar code reader should be able to scan any clearly printed bar code, but if you want really high quality labels made for retail you may want to invest in a high quality bar code printer (or take advantage of a high quality bar code printing services).

Don’t be discouraged by the amount of equipment needed for implementing a bar coding system. Much of it is readily available at major stores, along with detailed instruction manuals and technical support. It has become a universal system because of its efficiency and ease, and it will provide more opportunities for small businesses to make their product available through large retailers.

How Bar Coding Works

In the blink of an eye, a bar code scanner reads the black and white bar code as binary, using a laser that reflects off of the label. The scanner then feeds this information into your computer, and your computer interprets the information as a specific product. The computer organizes the data using bar code software in a way that is easy to print, easy to copy and easy to organize. Though it may sound complicated, it is one of the simplest ways to do inventory, no matter what you need to keep track of.
