Work Life Balance

Work Life Balance

Balancing the demands of work with your personal life

Balancing work with the rest of life can be very difficult in today’s fast-paced world. It’s especially hard for entrepreneurs. For many small business owners, their work is almost impossible to separate from the rest of their life. Many work out of their home and use the same car for business trips as taking their kids to school.

If you feel like your work is taking over the rest of your life, we can help. Here are some tips for a better work-life balance:

  • Manage your time effectively. Much of the stress small business owners feel doesn’t actually come from having too much to do and not enough time to do it. Instead, it comes from being disorganized. If you learn to manage your time wisely, you may find you have more than enough time to get everything done. Set some priorities and - most importantly - cut out all procrastination and other wasted time.
  • Share the load. Do you have so much work that you find yourself staying up late or getting up early just so you can get it all done? Do you work on weekends? If your work is creeping into the rest of your life, that’s a good sign that you have more on your plate than you can handle. It may be time to find an employee or two who can take some of the load off your shoulders.
  • Slow down. When things get hectic and your stress level starts to rise, simply put down whatever you’re working on. Take a few minutes and allow yourself to forget about work. Don’t worry, it will still be there when you get back. If you make important decisions while you are rushing and feeling stressed, you’re much more likely to make a mistake. During crunch time, don’t be afraid to take a break and take your dog for a walk (or do something else physical and enjoyable). When you come back to your work, you’ll feel refreshed and invigorated.
  • Figure out what really matters. Take time to really reflect on what’s important to you. Are you neglecting your spouse and children in order to increase your company’s profits by a few measly percentage points? If the answer is yes, it may be time to make some big changes to your lifestyle. Having a successful business is important. After all, you have to put food on the table. However, you also need to remember that your happiness is worth a lot more than anything money can buy.
