Recruiting
Tips for successful recruiting
Recruiting is the process of finding a group of people who are qualified for a job within your company, and then selecting the best individual from that group. Though recruiting is an everyday task for many large companies (in fact, many have whole teams devoted to recruiting), it’s something that many small business owners overlook.
If you hire the first person who applies every time you have a job opening, you may not be getting the most qualified candidate for the position.
Where to Recruit
There are many sources you can turn to in order to find potential employees. The best place to start is within your company. If you have a job vacancy, check to see if any of your current employees are ready to step into the role. You may not realize how much untapped potential your current employees have. If no one in your company is qualified for the job, ask your employees if they know anyone who is. Chances are, if your employees are hard workers, their friends will be too.
Only after you have checked your internal sources should you look outside your company to recruit. There are a number of external sources you can try, but first think about what kind of person you’re looking for. Putting an ad in a newspaper is a great way to attract applicants, but it can be expensive. Sometimes, all you need to do is put a “help wanted” sign in the window of your shop.
If your recruiting efforts fail to generate a pool of potential employees, you can always turn to a private or public employment agency. These services specialize in matching employees with employers. For a fee, they can do a lot of your work for you, including screening applicants' resumes and administering work-sample tests.
Writing Job Ads
To attract the best applicants for your job openings, it’s important to write good job ads. Make sure the job description is clear - if you clearly communicate what the responsibilities and rewards for the job are, you’ll help ensure you don’t waste time sorting through hundreds of applications from unqualified people.
