Product Development

Finding a process that works

New product development is important to small businesses because it keeps the company competitive. Product development is an overarching term that generally refers to the processes involved with generating an idea and introducing a product in a given market. It can involve either creating a new product or modifying or updating an existing product. Businesses should always strive to move ahead, as new developments can lead to financial gain. In addition to selling the product to clients, businesses can sell the products to other companies.

Product Development Process

The new product development process varies from product to product and from business to business. Generally speaking, the process involves coming up with an idea, and then designing the item and engineering it. The process can be done internally, depending on the company’s resources. Many companies designate a specific product manager who oversees the entire process. It’s important that the manager has a clear understanding of the company’s expectations.

Outsourcing

Businesses can also have an outside company take care of the product development process, but there are several factors to consider if they decide to take this route:

  • Will this approach cost more money?
  • Will the product actually belong to the company?
  • What about quality control?

If a business does decide to use an external source, it must stay in constant communication with that source to ensure it’s getting exactly what it wants during every step of the development process. Another option is to have only part of the services outsourced. For example, a business could hire a single product development engineer instead of an entire other company.

If a business currently doesn’t have the resources for product development, it should consider investing in it. Product development services can give a company an advantage in the ever-competitive business world.
