Office Equipment
The top 10 items you need for your small business or home office
If you’re just starting out with your business, there’s lots to do and plenty of decisions to be made. Where will your head office be? What money will you use to get things up and running? How will you compete in your industry?
A question that often gets overlooked is this - what kind of office equipment do you need to run a business? Finding the right office furniture may not be the most important decision you’ll ever make as a small business owner, but it's still a very important one. After all, the kind of equipment you have will affect your comfort and productivity.
Don’t try to operate a small business unless you have these items:
- Desks and chairs. Look for comfort and practicality rather than aesthetics.
- Phones. E-mail is the way of the future, but it’s still impossible to run a company without a phone. Your customers need a way to reach you.
- Computer equipment. Make sure your office is stocked with a printer and scanner, in addition to standard items like monitors and keyboards. Shop around for good deals.
- Copiers. You’re going to have to make a lot of copies, so don’t skimp here. You may want to consider a multifunction copier that can take care of all your copying, printing and faxing needs.
Staying Within Your Budget
When buying office equipment for your small business, make sure you don’t forget about your budgetary restrictions. It’s easy to go to an office supply store, get excited and go on a spending spree. You want your office to look nice, but you don’t want to blow all your money on furniture. Before you max out your credit card, ask yourself if you really need everything that want. Do you need a leather chair? Probably not. Save yourself a few hundred dollars and buy a chair with a cloth cover. Save the leather for when your business takes off.
Another great way to save money is to buy used office equipment. Keep your eyes open for liquidation sales. Thousands of companies go out of business every month and there are countless great deals to be found. Be smart with your money (which is something that many of these businesses didn’t do) and buy used equipment when possible.
